You open Amazon/ Flipkart to buy your favourite contrivance. You notice you can get a reduction if you pay using a credit card from a particular bank. And you get an advanced reduction if you buy on EMIs using the same credit card. intriguing, isn’t it? Why advanced abatements on EMI purchases? But first, why abatements at all?

Why Abatements on Credit Cards?

For the guests, abatements add value. You get the same item for lower. You would want to enjoy credit cards that constantly offer abatements on your favourite apps or websites. therefore, similar abatements increase the attractiveness of the cards in the eyes of the prospects.

Who Bears the Cost of the Reduction?

Let’s consider an illustration.
You want to buy a product with a listed price of Rs 20,000.
Your bank offers a 10 reduction on outright purchases of Rs 10,000 and over.
At a listed price of 20,000 and a reduction of 10, you can buy it for Rs 18,000.
On EMI purchases, the bank offers a12.5 reduction.
still, your card is first charged Rs 20, 000 *( 1 – 12, If you buy on EMIs.5) = Rs 17,500.
You conclude for a 6- month EMI.
Many days latterly, your bank converts this to EMI at say 15p.a.
EMI = Rs 3,045 for 6 months
You pay an aggregate of 3,045 X 6 months = Rs 18,273.

In both cases, the bank earns the MDR( a portion of it). Slightly less in the EMI purchase since the sale quantum is lower.
In the case of an EMI purchase, the bank earns the interest. And in some cases, the banks charge a processing figure too. For case, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and numerous other banks charge a processing figure when you buy on EMIs. For short-term loans, processing freights can have a big impact on the overall cost of the loan.

You can’t negotiate or conclude. It’s just there. The outspoken processing figure snappily covers a portion of the reduction( delta). So, if the processing figure is Rs 199, it covers a part of the redundant reduction of Rs 500.

Going back to the illustration.
The bank offered a Rs 500 redundant reduction on EMI purchases.
Got back Rs 199 in processing figures. Effective redundant reduction is only Rs 301.
No interest-free credit period. Assuming you bought on the first day of the credit cycle, the bank earns 15 interest on Rs 17,500 for 30 days. That’sRs. 219.
Now, the effective redundant reduction is only Rs 82. And for that, the bank will earn interest for another 5 months. Rs 554 in total over the coming 5 months.
Doesn’t look like a bad deal for the bank. What do you suppose?
